To the African Community,
Today, on March 6th, 2022, we gather here on Lesvos, the Greek island, to commemorate our friends, our brothers, and sisters who tragically lost their lives. Last Tuesday, on March 2nd, 2022, seven precious lives were taken from us. May their souls rest in peace.
The pain we feel is indescribable, and unless you have experienced the hardships and difficulties that we have faced, it is hard to truly understand our suffering. The situation for refugees around the Greek islands is a continuous struggle, as we become the first victims of war and conflict.
Many may think that war is only defined by bombs and explosions, but it is much more than that. For us in Africa, from the colonial period till today, our continent has never known true peace. The impact of war and civil conflicts in countries like the DRC, Cameroon, Somalia, South Sudan, Central Africa, and others is devastating, with countless lives lost daily.
When we seek safety and a better life, some label us “False immigrants” or accuse us of seeking to exploit social systems. However, the truth is that Africa, our home, is a continent that has been exploited for its raw materials and minerals, benefiting other countries while disregarding the well-being of its people.
Today, crime, discrimination, and racism are rampant, and refugees are denied their basic human rights. We mourn the loss of our friends, and we question the circumstances surrounding their deaths. The lack of identification and communication devices is suspicious and concerning. We call on the Greek government to protect its country and its people, as incidents like these are unacceptable for both the African community and the world.
We are not criminals; we are peaceful people seeking safety and a place to live. Just like everyone else, we desire peace. We stand in solidarity with our friends in Ukraine, who have also become refugees fleeing war and violence. To all Africans stranded at the border between Ukraine and Poland, and all people of color facing discrimination, we stand with you in spirit, and we will fight for our rights together.
We send a message to the presidents of African countries as well. The treatment of our people is a reflection of your leadership. We hold you accountable for your actions and demand an end to the suffering caused by your decisions.
We come together as one voice, united to say: Stop Killing Refugees, Stop using Refugees as weapons in wars. We are all human beings, no matter the color of our skin. We are one human race, and we deserve peace, love, and understanding.
Let us stand strong against discrimination and violence. We strive for a world where peace prevails forever.
Thank you.
